Como di Luís Troquel, esta canción recolle catro dos máis fermosos minutos da historia do pop. Un himno dos anos 80 e tamén unha fermosa canción de amor.

THERE IS A LIGHT THAT NEVER GOES OUT
(THE SMITHS)

Take me out tonight
Where there’s music and there’s people
And they’re young and alive
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven’t got one
Anymore

Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I
Want to see life
Driving in your car
Oh, please don’t drop me home
Because it’s not my home, it’s their
Home, and I’m welcome no more

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure – the privilege is mine

Take me out tonight
Take me anywhere, I don’t care
I don’t care, I don’t care
And in the darkened underpass
I thought Oh God, my chance has come at last
(But then a strange fear gripped me and I
Just couldn’t ask)

Take me out tonight
Oh, take me anywhere, I don’t care
I don’t care, I don’t care
Driving in your car
I never never want to go home
Because I haven’t got one, da …
Oh, I haven’t got one

And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Is such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure – the privilege is mine

Oh, There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out
There Is A Light And It Never Goes Out

En xuño de 1986 The Smiths publica un dos seus discos máis senlleiros e que cimentaron a súa fama ao longo dos anos oitenta do século pasado. The Queen is Dead recolle todo o bo que o grupo de Manchester aportou á música pop; o álbum que chegou a ter como título provisional Margaret On The Guillotine -en clara alusión a Margaret Thatcher, que por aquela estaba a destruir o estado social en Gran Bretaña e que tan bós epígonos ten no noso país- contén algunhas das cancións que calquera asocia co conxunto, entre elas There is a light that never goes out, un dos himnos do grupo ou esta que nos ocupa, onde Johnny Marr imparte un dos seus maxisterios coa guitarra na man. A desfrutar!!

THE BOY WITH THE THORN IN HIS SIDE
(THE SMITHS)

The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A murderous desire for love
How can they look into my eyes
And still they don’t believe me?
How can they hear me say those words
Still they don’t believe me?
And if they don’t believe me now
Will they ever believe me?
And if they don’t believe me now
Will they ever, they ever, believe me?
Oh …

The boy with the thorn in his side
Behind the hatred there lies
A plundering desire for love
How can they see the Love in our eyes
And still they don’t believe us?
And after all this time
They don’t want to believe us
And if they don’t believe us now
Will they ever believe us?
And when you want to Live
How do you start?
Where do you go?
Who do you need to know?

Oh …
Oh no …
Oh …
La …

Ask (The Smiths)

ASK
(THE SMITHS)

Shyness is nice, and
shyness can stop you
from doing all the things in life
you’d like to
Shyness is nice, and
shyness can stop you
from doing all the things in life
you’d like to

So, if there’s something you’d like to try
if there’s something you’d like to try
ask me – i won’t say “no” – how could i ?

Coyness is nice, and
coyness can stop you
from saying all the things in
life you’d like to

So, if there’s something you’d like to try
if there’s something you’d like to try
ask me – i won’t say “no” – how could i ?

Spending warm summer days indoors
writing frightening verse
to a buck-toothed girl in luxembourg

ask me, ask me, ask me
ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it’s not love
then it’s the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
that will bring us together

nature is a language – can’t you read ?
nature is a language – can’t you read ?

So … ask me, ask me, ask me
ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it’s not love
then it’s the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb, the bomb
that will bring us together

If it’s not love
then it’s the bomb
then it’s the bomb
that will bring us together

so … ask me, ask me, ask me
ask me, ask me, ask me
oh, la …

This charming man (The Smiths)

En concreto esta canción foi grabada o 14 de setembro de 1983 no programa de John Jennsen xunto con Back To the Old House, Still Ill e a inédita This Night Has Opened My eyes.

THIS CHARMING MAN
(THE SMITHS)

Punctured bicycle
on a hillside desolate
will nature make a man of me yet?
when in this charming car
this charming man

why pamper life’s complexities
when the leather runs smooth
on the passenger seat?

I would go out tonight
but i haven’t got a stitch to wear
this man said “it’s gruesome
that someone so handsome should care”

A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said “return the rings”
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things

I would go out tonight
but i haven’t got a stitch to wear
this man said “it’s gruesome
that someone so handsome should care”
oh, la-la, la-la, la-la, this charming man …
oh, da-da, da-da, da-da, this charming man …

A jumped-up pantry boy
who never knew his place
he said “return the ring”
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things
he knows so much about these things

Panic (The Smiths)

A historia desta canción é ben curiosa.

PANIC (The Smiths)

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you’re not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there’s Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

Burn down the disco
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music that they constantly play
IT SAYS NOTHING TO ME ABOUT MY LIFE
Hang the blessed DJ
Because the music they constantly play

On the Leeds side-streets that you slip down
Provincial towns you jog ‘round
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
HANG THE DJ, HANG THE DJ
Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ, Hang the DJ
HANG THE DJ

SHAKESPEARE´S SISTER
(THE SMITHS)

Young bones groan
And the rocks below say :
“Throw your skinny body down, son !”

But I’m going to meet the one I love
So please don’t stand in my way
Because I’m going to meet the one I love
No, Mamma, let me go !

Young bones groan
And the rocks below say :
“Throw your white body down !”

But I’m going to meet the one I love
At last ! At last ! At last !
I’m going to meet the one I love
La-de-da, la-de-da
No, Mamma, let me go !
No …

I thought that if you had
An acoustic guitar
Then it meant that you were
A Protest Singer
Oh, I can smile about it now
But at the time it was terrible
No, Mamma, let me go
No …

BIGMOUTH STRIKES AGAIN
(THE SMITHS)

Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking
When I said I’d like to smash every tooth
In your head

Oh … sweetness, sweetness, I was only joking
When I said by rights you should be
Bludgeoned in your bed

And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her Walkman started to melt
Oh …

Bigmouth, la … bigmouth, la …
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race

Oh, bigmouth, la … bigmouth, la
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race

And now I know how Joan of Arc felt
Now I know how Joan of Arc felt
As the flames rose to her roman nose
And her hearing aid started to melt

Bigmouth, la … bigmouth, la …
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race
Oh …

Bigmouth, oh … bigmouth, la …
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race
Oh …

Bigmouth, oh … bigmouth, la …
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race
Oh …

Bigmouth, oh … bigmouth, la …
Bigmouth strikes again
And I’ve got no right to take my place
With the Human race
